Career Opportunities

Petroleum Engineers work in multi-disciplinary teams primarily in four sectors.

  • Economics
  • Reservoir
  • Completions/Production
  • Drilling
Reservoir Engineers work towards assessing oil/gas deposits, extent of oil and gas recoverable, and appropriate methods for economic oil/gas production.

Completions/Production Engineers work to manage the boundary between the well and the reservoir using perforations, sand control, artificial lift, and downhole control.

Drilling Engineers work supervising drilling onshore and offshore exploration wells.

Starting salaries are between $60,000 and $110,000 (2006) with the possibility of outdoor and/or office work. As major oil companies operate worldwide, Petroleum Engineers enjoy frequent travel in Australia and overseas, with the opportunity to meet and work with people from different countries and cultures.
