With the continuing introduction of new and advanced technology, there is an increasing demands
for high-level training to enhance the technical skills of professionals working in the upstream oil and gas industry.

The Petroleum Industry has traditionally relied on 'on-the-job' training programs, supplemented by in-house and external short courses. The School of Petroleum Engineering (UNSW) also recognises that irregularity of working hours, family commitments, and short or long-term assignments at remote locations mean that for many professionals, traditional face-to-face education is simply not an option. Accordingly, the School offers formal distance learning programs designed to produce the level of technical competence necessary for petroleum engineers, geologists and geophysicists to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and to apply the latest technological developments in a cost-effective manner. The courses offered lead to the following degrees:

• Master of Engineering Science [MEngSc]
• Graduate Diploma [GradDip]
• Graduate Certificate [GradCert]
• Non-Award

All courses in the programs are delivered in electronic format and are designed to be undertaken externally by professionals currently working in the areas of petroleum engineering, geology and geophysics on a part-time learning basis. All the programs are supported by state-of-the-art commercial software in reservoir simulation, well test analysis, reservoir characterisation, drilling and well design, economics and risk analysis, human resource management and environmental management. Students receive fully functional copies of all the software required to complete their program of study. In addition, the 'online' interaction between participants with various levels of practical experience and expertise in a wide range of petroleum engineering disciplines further enhances the learning experience.

Current distance learning students are working in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, China, India, Oman, Yemen, South Africa, Holland, Spain, England, Scotland, Canada and USA.
