UNSW SPE Annual Dinner & Awards

Sydney, Australia by Jody Lowry

The 2007 UNSW SPE Student Chapter Annual Dinner was held on the 21st September at the Sofitel Wentworth Sydney. It was a celebration of the achievements of the graduating class, the 20th anniversary of The School of Petroleum Engineering and the 50th anniversary of SPE International. The night was a great success with over 100 students, academics and professionals in attendance. The chandeliers and champagne provided the perfect atmosphere for everyone to meet and chat before the dinner began.

The proceedings started with the 2007 committee being congratulated and then officially handing over their positions to the committee of 2008. Andrew Young, the managing director of Anzon Australia then gave an insightful commemoration to SPE and The Society’s achievements.  Amy Hudson, a graduate of UNSW Petroleum Engineering and currently a drilling team leader at AGR in Brisbane, was the first of our two main guest speakers. Amy gave a captivating presentation on her life since university and the exciting opportunities for students after graduation. A delicious meal was then enjoyed before Martin Kennedy, chief petrophysicist at Woodside, took the stage. Martin entertained us speaking of the escapades and responsibilities he has had during his extensive career in the petroleum industry.

The awards followed; each recipient ecstatic that their efforts throughout the year were being congratulated by the wider petroleum community. Finally, with the draw of the door prize, a fourth year student had all the luck, and left with a bottle of Moet.

The event was made possible trough the contribution of many. Particular thanks go to the UNSW School of Petroleum Engineering for their support and to each one of the generous sponsor companies. The sponsorship from industry of the dinner and prizes ensured the event was a great success.

UNSW SPE Student Chapter Field Trip to Brisbane

Sydney, Australia by Yildiray Cinar

On Sunday the 23rd of September the UNSW SPE Student Chapter gave fourteen students and two lecturers the opportunity to spend three days in Brisbane and experience the Australian petroleum industry. In those three days we met five companies (Santos, Oil Search, Origin Energy, AGR Asia Pacific, & QLD Gas Company), visited a coal bed methane drilling site (Arrow Energy), attended a seminar with the QLD Geological Survey and were guests at a QLD SPE Chapter Technical Lunch. After quite a few years without SPE field trips we are excited to hear that every participant found it to be an enjoyable and insightful experience.

The UNSW SPE Student Chapter would like to thank all of the companies who participated as well as the UNSW School of Petroleum Engineering for their support. We now look forward to the trip of 2008 and hope it too will be a success!
